Windows and Doors Maintenance
Windows and Doors Maintenance
Maintenance of wooden windows and doors is important to maintain their appearance, functionality, and longevity. Careful and regular maintenance provides comfort and ensures good quality. Here are some tips on how to properly care for wooden windows and doors.
Maintenance of Painted Surfaces of Windows and Doors
Wooden surfaces are coated with elastic, breathable, water-based paints. It is essential to preserve the paint layer as long as possible. The environment in which they are used and how they are maintained play a significant role.
• By protecting and maintaining the protective paint coating, we ensure the product's functionality and longevity. Painted surfaces should be periodically cleaned and refreshed with special products. Use only mild cleaning agents suitable for wooden surfaces, such as non-abrasive cloths or soft brushes. Do not use cleaners that contain aggressive substances like solvents or abrasives, as they can damage the paint surface.
• When repainting windows, it is advisable to consult qualified specialists or the paint manufacturer, who will provide the appropriate paints and instructions on how to do it.
• For wooden products with horizontal surfaces that are not protected by aluminum thresholds, additional annual maintenance is necessary to maintain the paint surface's longevity.
Note: Over time, changes in the product's color (for transparent coatings and olive surfaces) are a natural process and do not affect the product's functionality or quality.
Windows and Doors Hardware Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your windows or doors, it is necessary to perform the following tasks at least twice a year (preferably in spring and autumn):
• Wipe off dust, debris, and construction residues from the hardware with a dry, non-abrasive cloth.
• Check if the hinges of opening windows and doors are securely fastened and have not loosened. If they are loose, tighten the screws.
• When it comes to sliding parts on windows or doors, make sure there are no dust, debris, or construction waste in the moving joints. These should be removed; otherwise, you risk damaging the hardware. Improper closing of the hardware can deform the latch or cause it to fall out of the window frame.
• Clean window hardware only with mild, non-abrasive cleaners (e.g., soapy water).
Note: Acidic and abrasive cleaners can damage the hardware's anti-corrosion coating. After cleaning, dry with a dry, non-abrasive cloth.
• After cleaning, lubricate the moving joints and locking areas with grease or oil (see Figures 1, 2, 3, 4). Use non-acidic and non-tar-based greases or oils, such as sewing machine oil.
• Tighten the handles of windows if their bases have become loose.
• Lubricate the tongue and bolt of door locks after pushing them out.
• Operate the lock several times to ensure that the oil penetrates the lock mechanism.
• For easier operation of the key cylinder, it is advisable to use graphite powder.
Maintenance of Seals and Water Drainage Cavities
You should remove dust, debris, and construction waste from the seals to prevent cracks and deformation. At least twice a year, apply silicone grease to the rubber seals in the window and door frames to prevent them from cracking and maintain their elasticity. This preserves the sealing of the windows.
Check the condensation drainage chambers, which are located at the bottom of the frame and at the bottoms of the doors. If they accumulate debris or dirt, they must be cleaned; otherwise, water may accumulate inside the frame and leak into the interior.
Maintenance Tips for Windows and Doors
To ensure the longevity of your windows and doors, trust their maintenance to specialists who should perform:
• Inspection of wear and tear of sealing elements and screw checks.
• Inspection and adjustment of the operation of sealing elements.
• Lubrication of sealing elements and closure points.
• Inspection of seals.
• Cleaning of seals with a special agent.
• Glass inspection.
• Inspection of the external coating.
• Cleaning of the external coating with a special cleaner.
• Replacement of the glass package should only be done by a professional trained to do such work.
